*Tuesday, April 16—Artist Talk: Trevor Paglen*
*7pm, Broad MSU Education Wing*
*Admission: free*

Trevor Paglen’s work deliberately blurs lines between science, contemporary
art, journalism, and other disciplines, to construct unfamiliar, yet
meticulously researched ways to see and interpret the world around us.
Paglen’s photographs were recently described in the New York Times as
versions of creative nonfiction, producing “a doomsday view of the present
and the future,” and he was interviewed on the Colbert Report where he
discussed his new book of military patches worn by top secret officers,
“I Could Tell You But Then You’d Have To Be Destroyed By Me.”

Paglen’s work has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New
York; The Tate Modern, London; The Walker Arts Center, Minneapolis; The San
Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the 2008 Taipei Biennial; the 2009 Istanbul
Biennial; the 2012 Liverpool Biennial, and numerous other solo and group
exhibitions.

Ed Post is one of Grand Haven’s great photographers. He has sweet spots for
great shots all over town and the dune lands. For example, he has a
position on the north bank of the Grand River Estuary for capturing
plummeting peregrine falcons, “stooping” to snag birds for dinner. Post won
Grand Haven Art Walk for photography in 2010 and 2011. In 2012, the popular
Ottawa County judge “recused” himself from the competition, an unnecessary
yet noble gesture. Certainly, the judge and great eye of Grand Haven
deserves a mid career retrospective where great photographs such as this
one can be shown.

*Meet @Wyland, the painter of whaling walls all over the world, as the son
of Madison Heights @PureMichigan tours in 2013.*
**
Dear Wyland, I understand you closed the Wyland Gallery on Old Woodward in
downtown Birmingham. Even so, could you make a stop in Michigan. I see you
are making a stop on Middle Bass Island during the early boating season.
How about around then?

- Randall Woolf – Shakedown
- Sibelius – Symphony no.3
- Beethoven – Piano Concerto no.5 (Emperor Concerto), Awadagin Pratt,
piano

The West Michigan Symphony presents the spectacularly compelling, Naumberg
Award-winning pianist Awadagin Pratt in a thrilling performance of Ludwig
van Beethoven’s most beloved concerto. Pratt’s ability to dig deep into the
heart of the music is almost without peer—his playing ranges from the most
spine-tingling whisper to the most hair-raising fortissimo. Also on the
concert is the most lighthearted symphony of Jan Sibelius, the great
musical painter of breathtaking Finnish landscapes and sonic emotions; and
a modern masterpiece by Randall Woolf.

*Beth Charles
Just Over the Hill
Acrylic and gloss gel, 24”x24”
*
Born and raised in Michigan, Beth and her family have been residents of
Holland since 1996. She is a 1987 cum laude graduate of the University of
Michigan, having earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts with concentrations in
painting, drawing and illustration. Prior to coming to Holland, Beth
painted andexhibited her work in Dallas, Texas and Phoenix, Arizona.

Beth’s favored media is acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas which allows for
the painting to continue over the edge and around the sides, adding
dimension and a surprise to the viewer. Her subject matter ranges from
floral to abstract with a focus on realism. She has been working
increasingly more with the palette knife and acrylic mediums to enhance the
movement, color and texture of her work.

The ability to demonstrate painting techniques and understand color has led
to Beth’s success in teaching classes and workshops 8 months of the year.
She often collaborates with interior designers, private parties and gallery
owners to create commissioned art that meets their imaginative expectations
and design needs. Beth currently owns her own business, Beth Charles Art,
where she is a featured artist.
